Dr. Leonardas Žukauskas

Dr.  Leonardas Žukauskas has more than 23 years of legal experience in law firms. For the past 21 years, he has been specializing in international and European Union law, with a particular focus on human rights, migration and asylum law. Representing clients, he has achieved important achievements in the European Court of Human Rights (T. K. and others v. Lithuania No. 55978/20 and L. B. v. Lithuania No. 38121/20), the Supreme Court of Lithuania (criminal case No. 2K-217-413/2021), where courts have formed significant practice on asylum law issues. Attorney-at-law  Leonardas Žukauskas was also part of the international team of experts who represented the applicants before the European Court of Human Rights in the case of the Grand Chamber C.O.C.G and Others v. Lithuania No. 17764/22, which deals with the extremely important issue of the return of migrants. In addition to the above-mentioned cases in the field of migration law, Leonardas Žukauskas has accumulated a lot of experience in representing clients and various other legal issues: family law, labor law, inheritance law, contract law, immigration law etc.

In addition to legal practice, Leonardas Žukauskas carries out scientific activities. At the Institute of International and European Union Law at MRU, he teaches public international law, international human rights law, migration and refugee law. In the field of international migration law, he has defended his dissertation on the topic "Problems of Legal Regulation of Return of Illegally Staying Aliens: The Principle of Non-Refoulement and Return of Foreigners". For the best dissertation in the field of law in 2022/2023.  Leonardas Žukauskas also participates in various international and national research in the fields of migration and human rights, conducts trainings both in Lithuania and abroad.
